Here’s how to maximize the probability that you will enjoy success beyond even your wildest dreams as you baby step your way to greatness.

  1. Choose your destination.

Get clear on where you are and where you want to be. Then brainstorm—with no judgmental head talk—every conceivable way you can imagine to get there. Be sure to envision potential obstacles and how you might embrace them to help shape your optimal path to success.

  1. Dangle some carrots.

Without the lure of a payoff for all of your hard work, it’s really easy to become discouraged and quit when you actually encounter the obstacles. If you conspicuously post throughout your home and work space a list of the anticipated rewards for ultimately achieving your goal, you’re more likely to demonstrate the necessary creativity and persistence to stick with it when things get tricky.

  1. Get going.

Now that you know where you’re going, the many ways you could get there and why it’s worth the effort, get started. Trust your gut to pick the path that feels optimal at the moment and just start baby stepping your way to greatness. When it gets dark and the road is narrow and steep, remind yourself of the payoff and keep going. Keep gathering data, adjust your plan as you go based on experience and keep going.

You don’t have to know every step of the journey or every obstacle that you’re going to face. You don’t even need to have a fortune to fund you. All you need is

  • a clear destination,
  • a basic framework for getting there,
  • a worthwhile payoff,
  • the willingness to get started and
  • the flexibility to rework your plan on the fly.

Ready, aim, fire, STEER will be enough to get you going and see you through to the finish line.
