How to Get Stuff Done

There’s a lot of talk these days about manifestation. One perspective claims that if you focus hard enough on what you want, it will “magically” appear without any further effort on your part.

You Can Do It!

While knowing what you want is an important first step, it’s just the beginning. Once you get clear on your desires, you need to support their manifestation by aligning all of your energy—physical, mental, emotional and spiritual—and bringing to bear all of your resources: time, talents, creativity, experience and money. My great grandmother used to say, “Pray as if everything depends on God. Work as if it depends on you.” While setting an intention is a powerful catalyst, recognizing and taking the next right step—every step of the way—is just as important.

Easy does it.

The key is to keep your approach simple and relaxed—don’t freak yourself out and sabotage your success by setting the bar too high. Encourage yourself with regular pats on the back, breaks for recharging and spontaneous exclamations of “I totally rock.” Any time it starts to feel too hard, ask yourself, “How am I making this much harder than it has to be? What if this is easier than I think?”

Write it down.

The first step toward “manifesting” your desires is to make your wishes tangible by writing them down. Then go about your business. Revisit and refine your vision periodically to provide space for your first thoughts to ripen and mature over time.

Create a simple plan.

Once the changes to your vision dwindle to minimal tweaking and wordsmithing, draft an initial plan for making your vision a reality. Start with a simple list of the major elements needed to bring it to life. Rest, reflect and let things percolate. Revisit your plan periodically and add the next level of detail for each of the elements.

Refine, rest, reflect, repeat.

Continue this iterative process, putting the steps in what feels like the best order. Now focus on just the initial step. You don’t need a highly detailed plan for each step. It’s important to create an initial list of quick and easy things you can do right NOW to create momentum, experience success and start making progress toward your goal. Your initial steps can be as simple as buying a book to do further research, signing up for a class or opening a savings account. Success with initial baby steps will fuel even greater success down the line.

Find an ally.

As the old saying goes, “Teamwork makes the dream work.” Without collaboration and encouragement, the natural obstacles you encounter along the way may stop you in your tracks. Involve someone who believes in you and your vision and will hold you accountable while providing much appreciated honesty and constructive input. Be careful to share your dream with those who are loyal allies with a healthy sense of self esteem and not those who might be insecure secret saboteurs. In the early days, your dream is a fragile new life form. Only include others who will handle it with the care it deserves.

Engage a professional life coach.

At times like these, many turn to a credentialed life coach for professional quality collaboration and encouragement. With a clear vision, a simple baby step plan, a trusted ally and copious time for rest, reflection and refinement, you will find that you too have the discernment, resilience and commitment to turn your unexplored possibilities into fulfilling realities.

What baby step will you take right now to advance your vision?

About djwlifecoach

I am retired from 40+ years of helping individuals and teams build lives and organizations they love. One of the great joys of my retirement from professional practice is having greater bandwidth to donate my professional and creative talents to support and promote animal and social welfare charities. During my 30 years as an organization transformation consultant, I served as a senior partner in four of the world’s largest, most prestigious global professional services firms. In 2005, I took a five-year sabbatical to find healing and peace because non-stop work had taken its toll. My recovery from burnout led to finding my purpose guiding others on their journeys. As a board-certified coach, author, consultant, radio host, Reiki Master and EFT/tapping practitioner, I share hope, possibilities and empowerment with the world. 111419 DJW Sid CH Pet Corner Photo ShootI help clients achieve rapid, extraordinary, sustainable results by connecting who they are with what they do, a connection often lost through stress and the sheer busy-ness of daily life. Courageous self-awareness and unconditional self-love lead to honest choices based on priorities that nurture you and those around you on a journey to wholeness. Decades in coaching, consulting, change management, organization development, human resources and mixed media artistic expression honed my business sense, professionalism, creativity, intuition, leadership and communication skills. The result? Practical tools that help you become more insightful, creative, committed, productive and fulfilled. Even the most dedicated and hard-working individuals can shift from frustration to a sense of futility when their values, passion, work, and lives become disconnected. One of the problems with not taking care of our health is that the effects of ignoring it are often slow to show up. We continue to juggle family responsibilities, work and finances until we lose ourselves, waking up one day 50 pounds heavier in body and soul—no good to ourselves or anyone else. I love working with people who are ready to take life-changing action to make their dreams a reality. At each moment, you have inside you all the wisdom you seek to choose your life and your way of showing up. Limiting thoughts, beliefs and feelings can block you from moving forward. An absence of love and concern for yourself can result in negative head talk that holds you back with discouraging messages about who you are and what you can do. By listening and caring deeply, I guide you in connecting with your own inner wisdom. We identify the way you’d like to live. We determine what’s blocking you and release you from the hold those blocks have over you—unleashing the positive energy that will fuel you forward. Together we develop a plan to move you closer to your heart’s desire. My books, blog, radio show and signature coaching programs help individuals and organizations harness the transformative energy of love to turn unexplored possibilities into fulfilling realities and step into their greatness. What’s love got to do with it? Everything! My book, Choose Your Energy: Change Your Life! (Hay House/ Balboa Press 2013) shares my story and the stories of 10 of my clients along with my signature Discovery Framework. For fun, I love reading, sewing, knitting, yin yoga, afternoon tea, opera and movies. I live in Williamsburg, Virginia with my spouse, Wilson Abney, and the cat who runs our life, Maisy Jane.
