Dancing in the Moment

Throughout your life, you will encounter what you perceive as opposition and obstruction.

You wanted to leave for your vacation early in the morning before traffic gets heavy, but when you awoke you realized you forgot to pay the bills that come due while you’re away. Or you wanted to arrive early to the office so you’ll have time to finish your slides for an important presentation that morning, only to get stuck behind a 10-car pileup on the freeway with no exit in site.

While life doesn’t always align with your plans, your response will have everything to do with whether you experience an insurmountable obstacle or a golden opportunity. You get to decide whether unexpected opposition will be a curse or a blessing in disguise.

It’s a lot like dancing with a partner. With no resistance, you’ll find yourself flailing like a wet noodle. However, with even a little structure and tension, you’ll perform creative twists and turns that will leave everyone amazed.

r2g-p5-ai6-Afraid-Opposition-web

Like the kite that can only rise against the resistance of the wind, once you partner with your perceived opposition, you may just find yourself soaring to new heights you could never have reached from comfortable complacency.

As anyone who works out regularly can attest, opposition can help you develop strength, stamina, flexibility, stability and dexterity. Strength results from pushing or pulling against strong resistance. You gain strength—physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually—when you encounter opposition and engage it.

Opposition is inevitable. Instead of collapsing into victimhood or raging against circumstances, transform your minefields into goldmines. Turn your face into the wind, embrace your challenges and discover the hidden riches that lie within you. Choose your energy and change your life!

How will YOU dance with opposition TODAY?

The Power of Curiosity and the Joy of Cocreation

If you’re like many, you spend a lot of time making plans and trying to control the world around you. You know how you want your life to look and you apply considerable force trying to make it happen.

While taking charge, making a plan and showing initiative are valuable attributes for living a responsible, empowered life, even more important is how you respond when life doesn’t go according to your plans.

Play the Hand Your Dealt

Do you bemoan the cards you’re dealt with anger or despair? Or do you take a deep breath, recenter yourself and delight in the joy of discovering new possibilities and opportunities you hadn’t foreseen or imagined? Do you recognize that everything really is an opportunity to be embraced rather than an obstacle to be avoided or overcome?

When you fuel yourself with curiosity and a sense of wonder—appreciating your role as Universal cocreator, not supreme dictator—and celebrate your life as an ever unfolding journey rather than a series of strictly charted specific destinations, you relax and have a lot more fun.

When you stop being restrained by your own limited range of ideas and instead eagerly collaborate with the Universe in cocreating your life, you will be offered access to a much wider and richer palette of options with which to shape and embellish your journey. When you actively conspire with the Universe, life becomes a liberating, exhilarating, three-dimensional, Technicolor adventure.

Whatever life sends your way, take what you’re given, figure out how to spin it into gold, and trust that Universal love is always unfolding the highest good for all, in all, through all.

How will YOU cocreate with more curiosity and joy TODAY?

Step Boldly in the Direction of Your Dreams

Perfectionism is the single greatest cause of procrastination. Despite the desire for everything to be awesome, what perfectionism most often produces is a stack of discouraging, unfinished, “someday maybe” possibilities. If you keep waiting until everything is perfect, you may never start (which, to my way of thinking, is the antithesis of perfection).

Perfectionism is not a lofty goal or enviable trait, it’s a fear-based illusion riddled with lies and characterized by force. When you choose to fuel yourself with fear—by setting the bar too high and driving yourself incessantly—you burden and block yourself with chronic disappointment and disillusionment. Repeated often enough, this form of self-sabotage becomes a way of life that produces burnout physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Step Boldly in the Direction of Your Dreams

In contrast, excellence is a love-based reality characterized by a life of flow filled with faith, hope, prosperity, peace and joy. EXCELLENCE PROPELS YOU FORWARD. PERFECTIONISM HOLDS YOU BACK.

Eager to liberate yourself from the painful self-imposed prison of perfectionism and start thriving in the joyful freedom of excellence instead? Here are some tips to help you replace your habit of perfection-based procrastination with a passion for love-fueled excellence.

  • Write down your goal as if it’s already your reality.

Whether you’re planning a dream vacation or birthing your first book, write down your vision in simple, bold terms using present tense language. Resist the urge to over-architect and wordsmith. Just write from your heart. If you tend to get blocked by writing, try speaking it into a recorder and then transcribing what you said. Adding a picture to illustrate your vision ups the inspirational power.

  • Post your vision everywhere so it will stay top of mind.

Tape it to your bathroom mirror, post it on your refrigerator and tack it to the wall near your desk. Immerse yourself and your environment in your vision.

  • Memorize your vision and speak it aloud at least morning and night.

There is a power to hearing your own voice speak your desired reality. As you work on memorizing it, you’ll find that your language evolves organically over time into an even clearer statement of how you wish to show up in the world. “Bookending” your day by speaking your vision aloud first thing in the morning and last thing at night provides extra momentum in the form of greater energy, clarity, creativity and persistence.

  • Be your own best cheerleader.

One of my favorite tools to employ when I begin to block myself with the perceived enormity of a new project is to ask, “What if this is going to be much easier than I think?” Having opened the door to that delightful possibility, I immediately anchor it more deeply as an affirmation: “This project is going to be easy, fast, and fun. Effortless, joyful, creative, rewarding. Just the ticket to help me enjoy my life even more through new experiences, relationships and growth.”

  • Take simple steps forward every day.

Every morning, write out three SIMPLE things you need to accomplish to move yourself forward in achieving your dream or completing your project. We’re talking baby steps here, not giant leaps. No grand, comprehensive, spreadsheet-based plan. Just the next three little things you could do. Maybe there’s a phone call you need to make or an email you need to send. Maybe you need to renew your passport or purchase supplies. Take at least one of these baby steps EVERY DAY.

  • Give yourself a break!

The difference between fear-based procrastination and love-based percolation? Percolation is the art of the productive pause. As always, it’s the energy underneath our thoughts and actions—love vs. fear—that makes the difference. So while you’re working your baby step plan, remember to sprinkle your day with times for rest, reflection and play. Hard as it may be to imagine, interspersing your work with regular downtime results in far greater productivity than driving yourself relentlessly without regard for your personal health and welfare. Trust me—as the Queen of Burnout, I had to learn that one the hard way a whole bunch of times before I finally got it!

In the words of the now famous Nike ad campaign, “JUST DO IT.” If you get started right now, by the time circumstances improve, you’ll be well on your way and in a much better position to gain even greater benefit from all of those new resources and opportunities.

What baby step will YOU take toward your dreams TODAY?

Burning Your Ships!

Many years ago, seafaring Viking explorers had an inspired practice. When they arrived on the shores of a new land, they would unload all of their supplies and then burn their ships.

That way, they had no option other than to move forward into the great unknown, meet their new life head on and embrace it fully. While they may have valued the familiarity and security of their former homeland, they envisioned life as a grand adventure first and foremost. And so they anchored their bodies, minds, hearts and souls to the never-ending potentiality of glorious new possibilities.

r2g-p5-ai5-Coaster-webIt can be tempting at times to spend a lot of energy sticking to the script, coloring within the lines, staying in your own lane. We have endless strategies to help us do so: logic, to do lists, reminders, back-up plans, security systems, fail-safe mechanisms, insurance policies and, my personal favorite, elaborate spreadsheets.

But as we all know, circumstances can change in the blink of an eye, with absolutely no warning. And when they do, well conditioned muscles of faith, hope, creativity, adaptability, intuition, curiosity and resilience will prove far more valuable than all the spreadsheets in the world.

Don’t get me wrong. Having a plan is a useful tool for focusing your energy to manifest your desires. But no one can prepare, script or plan for every possibility. However comprehensive, detailed and brilliant your plans may be, I encourage you to always hold them loosely and stay flexible in your approach by remaining open to additional input from the Universe.

So that when things don’t go as you planned, you won’t add insult to injury by investing your energy in ranting, raving, blaming and freaking out. You’ll make the more constructive and loving choice to relax into all that was, is and will be—trusting that Universal love is always unfolding the highest good for all, in all through all.

Consider this: while having a plan can be powerful, spontaneity is essential to a life of vitality. So the Universe keeps life interesting and helps us stay nimble with frequent doses of the unexpected.

Choose your energy and change your life! Today is neither too soon nor too late.

Would you rather spend your life on the sidelines wrapped in the perceived safety of your spreadsheets and lists or GET IN THE GAME and start living your own thrilling adventure every day? The choice is yours and yours alone—one you get to make in each moment.

What ships will you burn RIGHT NOW so that you may step into the greatness for which you were born?

Oprah and Deepak FREE “Manifesting True Success” Online Meditation Program Launching 3/16/15

Register for FREE 21-Day MeditationA well-known Teacher once said, “I have so much to do today—if I hope to accomplish everything on my list, I must meditate twice as long.”

Most of us are more likely to say, “I have so much to do today, there’s no way I have time for meditation or anything else!” I used to say that myself until I figured out that I have all the time I need for the things that matter most. My role is simply to discern exactly what matters most in each moment.

The funny thing is that people from spiritual traditions throughout the world have long reported that regular meditation actually results in greater efficiency, productivity and abundance. They discover the power of flow: a generous, effortless, gracious way of living grounded in who you are being not what you are doing.

For those who might want to give it a try—and for those who are already committed to meditation—I wanted to share a great opportunity with you. Four times a year, through the Chopra Meditation Center, Oprah and Deepak offer a NEW completely FREE series of 21 online guided meditations. I love the programs in this series and use them myself. Their newest program, Manifesting True Success, will launch on March 16, 2015.

This program is a simple daily web-accessible recording with each meditation lasting about 15 minutes.

Whether you’re a seasoned meditator or you’ve heard that it might reduce your stress, improve your creativity and increase your sense of well-being, this program has a great deal to offer. For those new to meditation, it eliminates the perceived barrier of “too much silence” by easing you into a healthy new habit through a theme that ties the 21 sessions together with lots of speaking and guidance, very little pure silence.

And, for the seasoned meditator, it’s a great way to expand your options and approach. All meditation paths have merit because at their core they are all about the myriad ways we can hold ourselves in mindfulness. Doing the dishes, walking the dog, feeding the cat—all become meditative when entered into with focus and awareness. We are human beings, not human doings. Just me, just here, just now, just be.

Here’s what The Chopra Center has to say about these programs:

“Studies have shown that it takes 21 days of consistent behavior to change a habit or create a new one, such as establishing a regular exercise routine, eating a healthier diet, or taking time each day for self-care. In just 21 days, you can also establish a fulfilling meditation practice that will give you a lifetime of rewards. You may have dipped your toe in the water with limited success, but this time, you will have daily support and guidance that will enable you to move beyond any past obstacles and experience the many gifts and benefits of meditation.”

Ready to transcend your limiting beliefs and claim the joyful, limitless, creative power WITHIN YOU to manifest the life of generous, effortless, gracious abundance that you seek? Do so through the power of meditation with the help of your guides Oprah and Deepak in this FREE 3-week online interactive experience.

You’ll receive a daily email with a link to access the day’s meditation. Track your progress in a private notes section. It’s open to everyone—worldwide!  You can even purchase the program to enjoy over and over at your convenience to continue supporting this healthy habit in your life. I own the recordings of all of the past 21-day meditation programs and cycle back through them regularly to support my centering practice. They provide great value at a reasonable price.

Turn unexplored possibilities into fulfilling realities and step into your greatness!

Give Your Gifts to the Fullest

You were born with a unique combination of gifts that nobody else possesses. When you choose to use those gifts for the betterment of everyone around you, you optimize your own sense of fulfillment and enhance the energetic frequency of every being and situation you encounter just by freely expressing your authentic self.

Give Your Gifts to the FullestLooking to increase your sense of joy and constructive impact in the world? Here are some questions to help you identify your unique mix of gifts and talents so that you can spend less time struggling and resisting and more time JUST BEING YOURSELF.

  1. What do you like to do? Our talents usually show up as things we enjoy doing—those things in which we become so immersed, we lose all track of time. For some it’s singing or teaching. For others it’s hiking or accounting. Notice what you like and do more of it.
  1. What are you good at? Are you good with numbers or great at building things? Do you excel with a paintbrush or a spreadsheet? In what areas do you shine? Focus your energies in your areas of natural aptitude.
  1. What do people come to you for? When people recognize talent, they ask for more of it. Maybe people ask your advice on relationships. Or maybe they come to you seeking a shoulder rub. Being of service is a great way to share your talents and gifts.

Showing up with authenticity to live on purpose produces a life rich in meaning. You are a unique cocreative expression of the Divine. You are the only you we’ve got. You are a precious natural resource not to be taken for granted. The world is aching for you to show up fully. FIND YOURSELF AND BE YOURSELF! As Oscar Wilde once advised, “Everyone else is already taken.”

What will you do TODAY to better recognize, embrace and express your exquisite authenticity?

Lasting Happiness Springs From Within

Have you ever found yourself over indulging or over working in the hopes of making yourself feel better? Did either work for very long? Did each sometimes make things worse?

Lasting Happiness Comes From Within

Lasting happiness is a byproduct of a deep sense of equanimity and joy that originates within. Relying on stuff, external circumstances or third-party approval for sustainable happiness is a slippery slope, bound to disappoint. Here are two keys for cultivating life long contentment and joy.

  1. Get to know yourself.

The only hope for finding peace in this life—not just comfort but deep abiding peace—is to be insatiably, fearlessly curious about myself.

Not just the attractive ways I show up—my kindness, compassion, wisdom, generosity, and humor. It is important for me to acknowledge those things, but it is not enough. I need to be endlessly inquisitive about all of it, especially the unattractive habits—my insensitivity, impatience, obsession, bitterness, anger, anxiety, and despair. I have grown the most and found deep abiding peace only by embracing the ugly parts as well: appalling thoughts, speech, and behavior. It all matters and must be considered in the mix—the good, the bad, the pretty, and the ugly. All of it acknowledged with courage, compassion, and love. This concoction of disparate and dissonant motivations and behaviors is what it means to be human.

We are all capable of the full range of human motivations and behaviors; none of us is exempt. Refusing to see any part of it, lulling myself into oblivion by clinging to an incomplete, distorted Polly Perfect self-image always leads to my undoing. The greater and deeper the denial, the longer and harder the fall because that which is denied will wreak havoc. Maybe not today or tomorrow. But the longer I look without seeing and hear without listening, the more I stand to lose.

The great irony is that I’m the only person fooled when I deny the full truth of how I show up. I broadcast it through what I say and when I am silent. Through the actions I take and the times I fail to act. Through what I cherish and what I reject. Through what I long for and what I fear. I am the only one kept in the dark by living a life of denial about myself.

One of the greatest gifts I can give anyone is having the honesty and courage to see and share myself fully so that we both might benefit from our shared insight, compassion, and good humor—failures, resilience, victories. We are here to help each other grow by sharing without reservation the only thing we have to give—our authentic selves.

  1. Fall in love with yourself.

One of the problems with not taking care of ourselves is that the effects are often slow to show up. We continue to juggle family responsibilities, work, and finances until we lose ourselves, waking up one day fifty pounds heavier in body and soul—no good to ourselves or anyone else.

Bottom line? It’s not just okay to fall in love with yourself. It’s essential.

It all starts with embracing the amazing and liberating possibility that the love of your life just might be YOU. Many people tell me it feels selfish to think in those terms. That we are supposed to love and care for “our neighbor.” I remind them we are also supposed to “love our neighbor as ourselves.” Many of us would end up in court or prison if we treated our neighbors the way we treat ourselves.

We cannot share anything of lasting value with others by giving from an empty well. When we learn to treat ourselves with love, respect, curiosity, compassion and gratitude in each and every moment, then, and only then, will we find ourselves able to be of genuine service to others.

It is interesting that those who learn to fall in love with themselves are actually less likely to behave selfishly. Their joy and peace are contagious. They show up in their families, workplaces and friendships with a spring in their step and a zest for living that carries them, and those around them, forward in new and exciting directions.

What does falling in love with yourself look like? Remember the last time you fell in love with someone else? How did you treat the object of your affection? You probably thought about him a lot, paid attention to his needs, and treated him as if he mattered. Because, to you, that person did matter; he mattered a great deal. In fact, you probably became downright obsessed with every aspect of your beloved.

Falling in love with yourself looks just like that: paying attention and treating yourself as if you matter. Because you do; you matter a great deal. You are a unique cocreative expression of the Divine. You are the only you we’ve got. You are a precious natural resource not to be taken for granted.

When you fall in love with yourself, everything else finally falls into place. This transformation arises from a fundamental shift in your head and heart. Once love transforms your relationship with yourself, it can’t help but transform your personal life and work in ways that will exhilarate you. Your more constructive personal energy will automatically transform every being and situation you encounter. You will, by your very presence, quite literally, transform the world.

In every situation, love yourself enough to pay attention to every aspect of your life. Respect everything you are experiencing—what you are thinking, feeling, deciding, saying, and doing. Determine whether the energy underneath is love or fear. If it’s love, you are probably on your authentic path. If it’s fear, demonstrate compassion for yourself. Foster gratitude by reminding yourself that everything is an opportunity. Then further neutralize the fear by bringing curiosity to bear. Explore every aspect of the situation, especially your internal landscape, and identify all of the opportunities available to you through this unique experience. As with any new skill, practice will help this way of being become a healthy new habit—your automatic response to every situation.

When you chase it, happiness can prove elusive. When you give up the chase and turn your attention inward, you’ll find happiness waiting to greet you with open arms. Figure out what you want, understand whether it’s fueled by fear, transform any fear into love, set your intention, and then get ready to receive it, because it will happen.

What will YOU do to invite greater happiness into your life TODAY?

Living in the Realm of Infinite Possibilities

Have you ever noticed that when you’re worried about something, all you can think about is your problem?

Then sometimes, out of the blue, someone comes in with a fresh perspective, and your supposedly UNSOLVABLE problem suddenly has DOZENS of potential solutions?

You can be one of those “fresh perspective” people. In each moment, you create the kind of world you want to live in by the thoughts, beliefs and feelings you choose to fuel yourself with. Choose Your Energy: Change Your Life!

You can limit your possibilities, constrict your world and SURVIVE in the realm of WHAT’S WRONG by only seeing obstacles, or you can multiply your options, expand your world and THRIVE in the realm INFINITE POSSIBILITIES.

r2g-p11-ai5-Possibilities-web

People who live in the Land of Possibilities are sought after visionaries and problem solvers. They still encounter adversity like anyone else but they are more efficient and effective at transcending perceived challenges and setbacks and helping others do so as well.

When you focus on finding the opportunities in challenging situations, you identify better solutions much more quickly—while having a lot more fun!

One of my favorite techniques during my 30 years as a management consultant was that, when you have a seemingly unsolvable problem, go back and reconsider what you started by rejecting at the outset. Identify all the possibilities that you didn’t really consider because you thought they could never work or that you would never do them. When you look at your self-imposed limitations with fresh eyes, an open mind and a renewed sense of insatiable curiosity, you often find the secret solution that’s been evading you.

You access your own inner brilliance by letting go of any limits. When you unleash your creativity by using your imagination to consider the most ridiculous, fantastic, out-of-left-field ideas, one of them will inevitably spark a new idea that will provide the answers you’ve been seeking.

What IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBILITIES will you PLAY WITH today?

When Life Hands You Lemons

At 18 years old, Bob Cox was a young, promising hockey player. He worked hard, practiced often and had dreams of one day playing hockey professionally.

Then one day while riding his motorcycle, he lost control and took a nasty spill. During the accident, his left arm was severed from his body just below the shoulder.

When Bob awoke in the hospital, the doctors told him that the damage was too extensive and that reattachment was not an option. At 18, all of his past dreams for his future were shattered.

r2g-p5-ai9-Trouble-web

Grateful to be alive, Bob remembered that EVERYTHING—even an unexpected and painful experience—IS AN OPPORTUNITY. With a constructive mindset, Bob committed to learning how to live with only one arm. Though he knew that the ice was no longer a viable field of play, despite pain and setbacks, he still had a passion for athletics. So he took up golf.

In time, Bob developed his very own, very powerful golf swing. Today he’s regarded as a top player, competing professionally and helping amateurs and pros alike perfect their game. He also helps organize events for the Special Olympics, helping young people achieve their own “impossible” dreams.

Had Bob never lost his arm, he wouldn’t have discovered the unique opportunities that now shape his life. His “misfortune” became the path to inspiring others to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and step into their greatness.

How will YOU make lemonade from life’s lemons TODAY?
